Apple Crumble

Now that the weather is cooling down here in Australia, warm comfort food is becoming more and more appealing. In our family, nothing says comfort food like an apple crumble. Soft and juicy fruit on the inside, chewy and crispy crumble on the outside. The best part… it’s healthy! Oil-free, refined sugar-free and a gluten-free option for those sensitive to oats. This dish is super quick and easy and is the perfect dessert to whip up after dinner when you’re craving something sweet.

Let’s get to it!

7-8 apples, peeled and roughly chopped

¼ cup currants/chopped dates (optional)

1-2 tsp cinnamon

1 Tbsp maple syrup

1 cup shredded/desiccated coconut

1 cup oats (if GF, substitute with more coconut and almond meal)

½ cup almond meal

½ cup almonds, chopped

1 tsp cinnamon

½ cup maple syrup

  1. Preheat oven to 200 degrees celcius

  2. Steam or boil chopped apples until slightly soft

  3. In the meantime, make the crumble by adding all CRUMBLE ingredients to a bowl

  4. Mix well

  5. Transfer cooked apples into a dish and add APPLE ingredients

  6. Mix well

  7. Pour crumble mixture over the top of the apples and gently press down to flatten

  8. Use a spoon or a fork to make the surface loose and crumbly

  9. Place dish in oven and cook for approx. 10-15 minutes or until crumble is lightly golden. If the top layer of the crumble gets too brown, carefully mix up the crumble and place back in the oven to ensure all crumble is getting evenly cooked

  10. Serve warm on its own or with coconut yoghurt or vegan ice-cream.
